MyPyramid.gov: A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body
While we’re pretty certain we don’t need to sell the idea of healthy eating habits in children to our parent readers, we also believe most parents would welcome some help with dietary guidelines, smart meal planning, suggestions for healthy snacking for kids (and adults!), and other handy tips to promote healthy eating in their homes.
The Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (at the US Department of Agriuclture) maintains a fantastic website for adults as well kids with the noble intention of (1) advancing and promoting food and nutrition guidance for all Americans (the information is most certainly useful for non-Americans too); (2) assessing diet quality; and (3) advancing consumer, nutrition, and food economic knowledge.
We found the sections catering to specific audiences to be very useful, particularly these ones for preschoolers and kids (6-11 years). This game for kids seems like fun (it needs a high-speed internet connection though). Colorful posters on the food pyramid – one for younger kids and this one for advanced elementary kids – could serve as helpful daily reminders of the importance of healthy eating habits and physical exercise. There are several more interesting sections on this site, besides the ones we’ve highlighted.
A great site to explore, and on a very important subject too!
