‘Math in the Movies’ may be a much more compelling rationale to motivate children to learn and enjoy math than the oft-used ‘math in everyday life’ one.
In this Science Daily piece from 2007, animators from the crazy cool Pixar Animation Studios share that “it is high school math that can actually help bring animated movies to life” and how “trigonometry helps rotate and move characters, algebra creates the special effects that make images shine and sparkle and calculus helps light up a scene.”
The short video accompanying the article, with scenes from movies like Toy Story, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles, is a must-watch for all kids, and especially those that need some motivation to stick with their high school math classes.
