Puzzles and Brainbenders

January 14, 2009

Traditionally, school curricula have favored left-brain thinking (logical, sequential, analytical and objective thinking) by placing an inordinate emphasis on science and math, and using assessment methods that focus on accuracy and a single correct answer in all subjects. This is changing, however. In recognition of creative thinking as an essential 21st century skill, schools and teachers the world over are being encouraged to also focus on right-brain thinking by employing creative teaching techniques and also encouraging creativity among students.

Enchanted Mind is a good resource for fun games and puzzles which exercise both the left and right brain. The “brainbenders” and interactive java puzzles in the Puzzles section involve the use of spatial thinking and visual skills in addition to analytical and logical problem solving. Tangrams, Pentominoes, Mastermind, Knight’s Tour are some such games that can be found on Enchanted Mind.

The site also contains links to materials on creativity as well as archives of Mensa weekly puzzles.
