The Franklin Institute – A Great Resource for Learners & Educators

August 11, 2010

Mortimer wants some doughnuts. He likes to save even the smallest amount of money. He found a coupon in the paper for Dunkin’ Donuts. The coupon was for $1 off a dozen. This week they are on sale for $3.99 a dozen without the coupon and $.35 a piece if you use the coupon. What do you think Mortimer will do and why?

Find open ended math problems like this one and many more fabulous Science and Math resources – aimed mostly at 4th-8th graders – at the Franklin Institute Resources for Science Learning website.

The Franklin Institute screenshotIn addition to featured sections like this one on the Human Brain and this one on the Foucault Pendulum, there’s a pretty decent Online Math Collection of problems that include categories like Melting Pot Math: Multicultural Problems for the 21st Century, Open-Ended Math Problems, Puzzling and Perplexing Seasonal Math Problems, Neighborhood Math, Mathematics Hotlist, and even Toothpick Puzzles (similar to SmartBean’s popular post on Matchstick puzzles).

In addition to resources for students, there are Curricular Companions that help 4th through 8th grade teachers implement Science and Math curriculum. While these are tied specifically to PA state standards, they are a good resources for educators anywhere.

This wonderful website is an effort of the The Franklin Institute’s Center for Innovation in Science Learning (CISL) team. Check it out!
